Rihanna gets away with so many outfits that normal humans would never be able to wear, but lately she's been wearing sunglasses that look straight-up alien. Or at least straight out of Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century.
The star, who pretty much put Dior's bridgeless So Real specs on the map in 2014, seems to be looking lightyears into the future for her new collaboration with Dior. Women's Wear Daily confirmed that the Star Trek-like shades are part of an exclusive Dior collab called, simply, Rihanna. The sunglasses, which come in six different styles, hit stores starting in June.
As WWD notes, Rihanna has been a brand ambassador for over a year. But actually designing for Dior, as she did for the sunglasses, is a first for a brand face, who typically just poses for ads but doesn't take on further creative duties. Having Rihanna do so may be a savvy move on Dior's part, since the LVMH-owned luxury house has yet to name a new creative director after Raf Simons's departure last October. In the absence of real design leadership, why not farm out those duties to the most marketable celebrity on the face of the earth, who has lately been establishing herself as a creative force at Puma? It's a clever distraction while we wait for Dior to find Simons's successor.
RiRi's been teasing the sunglasses all over her Instagram. In the above pic, she assembled an entire outfit around her self-branded items, including her Puma collection (and one has to assume she's also wearing her Stance socks). But the pièce de résistance are the shiny, shiny sunglasses that look like a reflective version of the 3-D glasses you get at movie theaters.
Here's all the soon-to-launch Rihanna x Dior sunglasses the pop star's been spotted in lately. Are we earthlings ready for these starting in June — and at $840 a pop?
Let's see the purple shades again.
Of course, RiRi has had a thing for futuristic sunnies for some time. Here she accessorized her Princess Diana tee and Manolo thigh-high boots with alien-looking Miu Miu specs. They're style number MU 12QS 1AB-4N2 and you can buy them for $415.
If you can peel your eyes away from Rihanna's insane Gucci tracksuit, the most glamorous tracksuit in all the land, you'll notice she's also wearing goggle-like glasses that could be out of a '50s sci-fi movie. Fan site Rihanna Overdose has it that she’s wearing vintage Jean Paul Gaultier sunglasses in style number 56-6201.
Last but not least, in this ad for Puma, Rihanna wears a spacesuit poncho and a visor that's essentially sunglasses for your forehead.
