Phoebe Dahl’s womenswear brand Faircloth & Supply is exactly what you’d expect from a granddaughter of Roald Dahl, the famously fanciful children’s author. There are ruffled bloomers, drop-inseam trousers, and whimsical drapey shifts with unexpected slits, all whipped up in linen—a fabric she’s been charmed by since she was a kid. “My grandmother owns an antique textile boutique in Santa Fe,” she says. “I spent a large amount of my childhood rummaging through fabric and playing dress-up in linen nighties and sleep caps.”

The 26-year-old Angeleno studied at both the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and the London College of Fashion after high school, but she knew she wanted to design long before that. “When I was about 12, my mother had grounded me and took away all my electronics—an absolute nightmare at that age—but that week I picked up sewing. A few weeks later, I was making circle skirts by the dozens and selling them to all the girls at school for $50. From that moment, I haven’t stopped.”

Dahl isn’t all style and no substance; for each item sold by Faircloth & Supply, a Nepali girl is given a one-year scholarship to attend school, two uniforms, and supplies.—Casey Lewis
