Beauty Obsession of the Week: Lush's New Gorilla Fragrances

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Our long-term crush on Lush, the Canadian British skincare company, started back in the days of Sassy—when one writer waxed poetic about visiting a then-only-in-Canada outpost and ordering her soap custom-cut from the block—and is still going strong today. The beauty company's ethos—its preference for using minimalistic packaging, few preservatives, and fresh, organic ingredients—was always decades ahead of its time and is still refreshingly modern.

Lush's newest launch is its series of Gorilla Perfumes, five scents—Imogen Rose, Lust, Orange Blossom, The Smell of Freedom, and Tuca Tuca—that'll appeal to anyone who's bored with the same old mass-market scents.

Our favorite bit: Isn't the packaging gorgeous? Gorilla Perfumes are available in 30 ml bottles, 9 ml atomizers, candles, and solid sticks.

Imogen Rose: A soft, exquisite Damascus rose perfume using 100% pure rose oil and garden fresh notes of basil. It moves quickly into baby soft talc with tonka and rose absolute producing a warm embracing middle note. Finally the dry down is a sweet amber with vetivert, orris and ambrette seed providing a warm floral finish. Imogen Rose is $64.95 for 30ml perfume; $24.95 for 9ml atomizer; $15.95 for solid stick.

Lust: Unashamedly carnal and sexy, this fragrance is pure jasmine. It’s extremely provocative, sensual and erotic. Jasmine, ylang ylang and sandalwood are all aphrodisiacs and help relieve any inhibitions. Lust is $32.95 for 30ml perfume; $13.95 for 9ml atomizer; $8.95 for solid stick; $32.95 for candle.

Orange Blossom: Fresh orange blossom absolute and neroli oil burst out of the bottle like a distilled Mediterranean moment. Over time, the honeyed and woody tones develop on your skin and you are left with a warm glow. Orange Blossom is $36.85 for 30ml perfume; $15.95 for 9ml atomizer; $9.95 for solid stick; $34.95 for candle.

The Smell of Freedom: The Smell of Freedom combines three beautiful fragrances to a wonderful effect. This perfume is based on Simon's experiences of meeting three survivors of hardship, and the common factor was freedom. The Smell of Freedom opens with a fresh, herbal accord and reveals its complex, spicy and woody nature as it warms on your skin. The Smell of Freedom is $49.95 for 30ml perfume; $19.95 for 9ml atomizer; $12.95 for solid stick.

Tuca Tuca: A light summery perfume that starts with a blast of fresh violet top notes with a rich floral feel from cassie absolute. As it settles on your skin the warm vanilla and ylang ylang move the perfume into its middle notes and then the dry down is violet leaf and vetivert. Tuca Tuca is $29.00 for 30ml perfume; $10.95 for 9ml atomizer; $8.95 for solid stick; $32.95 for candle.
