It's official, Tavi Gevinson the 14-year old wunderkind fashion blogger's career is kicking our collective ass. Yesterday on her blog, Style Rookie, Gevinson announced that she is launching a magazine with Jane Pratt, founder and former editor of the late, great, 90s teen girl magazine Sassy.
What? Tavi wasn't even alive during Sassy's heyday. How did this even happen? Gevinson explains:
You guys may know how I feel about Sassy. You also may know that I've been babbling about how I think our generation should get one, too. Jane Pratt, founding editor and then EIC of Sassy, also became aware, and emailed me, and we've met a couple times, and it looks like we're going to start a magazine for an audience of wallflowerly teenage girls.Gevinson says that this won't be "the rebirth of Sassy, or Sassy 2.0," but she will be using Sassy as a "point of reference." Oh yeah, and she's also put out an open call on her blog for contributors—anyone who wants to write for Gevinson's Sassy should email: MagazineSubmissionsAreFun@gmail.com.
Now for the mixed feelings: We can't tell if this queasy feeling in our stomach is because we're excited for girl-mag-world to get an independent magazine, or because we're jealous a 14-year old gets to launch a magazine with mother-of-Sassy Jane Pratt, or because it bothers us that someone who didn't live through the Sassy era the first time around is staking claim to its legacy in such a major way. We're probably just jealous. Anyway, good on Tavi for doing it for girl-world. Two thumbs up for independent publishers and fashion magazines.
