It was the style choice seen 'round the world. Last week, just after the official announcement of the engagement of Britain's Prince William to Kate Middleton, the couple gave their first photo call. Both chose demure navy blue for the occasion, but of course it was Kate's sleek jersey dress?by Issa London, a favorite designer of hers?that stole the show and sold-out without hours.
With the racks at Harvey Nichols swept clean of the $616 frock, stores are scrambling to replicate the design and cash in on the royal frenzy. WWD reports that the cheapest offering of a dress inspired by the original went on sale today at Tesco, a UK chain. The price tag? A mere £16 (or about $25.50).
Of course there are rumors that Middleton will also ask the London-based Brazilian designer behind Issa to create the wedding dress, but whatever Kate chooses to wear, there's no doubt that high street knock-offs will follow almost immediately.
