Marc Jacobs Collection Shop Opens In Chicago Two Days Early

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

As you read this, the new Marc Jacobs Collection store is opening in Chicago, in the street level retail space at the also very new Elysian Hotel. It debuts two days earlier than expected and brings the higher priced MJ clothing to Chicago for the first time, since the Windy City had just a Marc by Marc Jacobs store until now, and that's only been around since 2007 in the Wicker Park neighborhood.

This collection store, as a high-ranking Racked operative who visited the location tells us, boasts very high ceilings, striking black tile mosaics, plush brown carpeting ("that'll be absolutely wrecked by the salt from the streets"), a kids' section with one of the huge stuffed giraffes like in the New York Little Marc store, and a feminine color scheme of purple, gold, black and dusky pink.

The new MJ store is being announced around Chicago via plain "Marc Jacobs Chicago" billboards over the busy interstate highways, and although there's no address on the billboards, every Chicagoland resident knows the district for shopping like this: the Gold Coast near Rush and Walton. And that's exactly where you'll find Marc.

He joins a rash of new luxury shops to pop up in the area in the last two years, including a fresh many-storied Barneys and the not-so-new but still important Jil Sander, the first Jil Sander boutique in the US.
