We've never known men to fall into any kind of distress over buying pants—but, according to the Guardian's Simon Chilvers, maybe they should. What kind of message are the pants you wear to the office sending about you? Are they holding you back? We like his tips, which include:

· Accidentally wide trousers can just look too big, but stylishly wide trousers – like these in Dries Van Noten's spring/summer collection – say you're on trend and not afraid to experiment.
· If you're aged over 23, super-snug skinny trousers say you're trying too hard, or have an unhealthy interest in Russell Brand. Instead think slim, as illustrated on the catwalk at Burberry.
