Happy 10th USA Bday To H&M! We Visit the Oldest H&M on Earth.

New, 1 comment

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Ten years ago today, the first H&M opened on American shores at 51st Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City. Today, to celebrate its ten-year anniversary, H&M is offering special buy-one-get-one-free deals and 20% off all kid's wear at all H&M's in the United States.

And now the bit for H&M enthusiasts: Because we are fashion-retail nerds, Racked National has actually been to the oldest H&M in the world...

... and, surprise, it looks just like every other H&M on earth.

The oldest H&M in the world is located in Vasteras, a small city west of Stockholm in central Sweden. Hennes and Mauritz was founded (and opened its first store) in Vasteras in 1947.

We traveled to Vasteras in 2007 to visit friends and check out the Power Big Meet, which is a whole other talk show—it's the biggest American vintage car meet-up in the world (yes, the world), and attracts thousands of visitors from all over, most of whom are into dressing as if they're straight out of a 1950s sitcom or Hell's Angels movie. True story.

Anyway, while we were in town, we popped by the oldest H&M on earth and rooted around a little, expecting to at least find some commemorative "I visited the oldest H&M in the world" T-shirts. No dice. It's just a normal, humungous H&M filled with normal H&M stuff.
