Would You Pay $12,000 for a Toilet? What if has a Massage Feature?

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Toto brand toilets can automatically open, close, flush, they'll wash your, uh, front and rear, many of them feature heated seats, and there's even a built-in mysterious "massage feature" we're not sure we want to learn any more about. The company is Japanese (surprise) and products can be priced as high as $12,000.

Toto has just opened its first shop in the UK—on St. John Street in Clerkenwell. In the United States, the Japanese toilets can be found in certain restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.
