Katy Perry's New Look in Lucky: From Betty Boop to Bettie Page

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In the June issue of Lucky, songstress Katy Perry talks about the evolution of her look—which hasn't come easy. Perry says she didn't have any money when she was first starting out: "I was completely broke," she says. "I used to borrow outfits, get my makeup done at makeup counters, and then sneak into events. It was cool! I seemed to be wearing things right."

Since hitting it big, Perry's ditched her little-girl look and stepped it up to sex kitten. "I’ve gone from Betty Boop to more Bettie Page,” she says. “It’s less cute and more meow."
