Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Things that have replaced greeting cards: text, phone, e-cards, airplane with banners, Facebook, singing telegrams... you get the idea.

This is going to sound crazy, but card behemoth American Greetings have actually come up with an added-value feature that makes us really really really want to buy greeting cards again—so much so that we just sent our intern on a wild goose chase all over the East Village looking for some.

Introducing the just-released Tasties collection—a line of greeting cards that feature flavor strips that correlate to the occasion.

For example, there's one card that reads: "If nothing else, birthdays are a great excuse to eat cake," on the outside. Inside? There's a birthday cake flavor strip, just like the one above. OMG, right?
