One could argue that with Coachella in nearby Indio, Palm Springs has enough of an annual style infusion to put the city on the map, but locals are looking for more. Palm Springs wants to establish a formal shopping district and secure a position in the roster of international fashion destinations.
Their inspirations? The Garment District of LA and Soho in New York. But the first huge item on the agenda of the newly-formed Palm Springs Fashion Council is to host a Palm Springs Fashion Festival. And they're not talking events focused around big, luxury brands; the city has few of those shops as it is. Instead the goal will be to "create a mentorship program for new designers as well as create a support base for local, established designers and business owners to bolster the fashion presence in the desert city," says Mike Jordan, president of the fashion council.
No dates for a Fashion Festival have yet been announced, but let's hope it won't be during the summer, when 110+ temperatures and direct, desert sun in Palm Springs complicate any attempts at personal style.
