Remember that last season or two of the Facts of Life when Mrs. Garrett left to get married and her sister, Cloris Leachman, showed up and took over the burned-down bakery only she was a majorly lousy cook so she turned it into a totally '80s, totally funky novelty and gift shop complete with inflatable palm trees and pink flamingos?
No? Just us? Well, anyway, Pink Palm, a clever little South Beach shop, is definitely giving us those vibes. And, frankly, those vibes are absolutely great.
Even from outside you know it's going to be adorable—one window features Cloris's pink flamingos and the other a fuzzy, plush wall of Uglydolls. Inside a front table features candles, candlesticks and various home decor items while a low table along the cash wrap features a smart selection of humor and gift books ranging from charming to delightfully raunchy.
The shop is packed to the gills: Elsewhere find music from Putamayo; a vast array of Anne Taintor's vaguely feminist and always hilarious witticisms and retro imagery printed on coffee mugs, stationery, magnets and change purses (someone buy us "You be Thelma/I'll be Louise"); a huggable, plush version of Edvard Much's The Scream; and four unique Michelle Obama action figures (choosing between the Narciso and the Thakoon will be a major challenge).
You could lose half a day in the shop's rear, where a zany array of not-quite-traditional and often hilarious greeting cards and postcards await. And, if you're buying gifts—for parents, for pets, for babies, for gays, the stock seriously runs the gamut—just turn around. There you'll find a unique selection of gift wrap and gift bags to pop those presents in—be they quirky flasks, embellished dog leashes, piggy banks, or framable prints of Miami scenery.
