By far, one of the most challenging hurdles a young designer must scale when entering the fashion industry is the difficulty in getting exposure. Most fashion design schools pour thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of dollars into producing elaborate graduate shows and attracting press, but after the runway lights go off, then what? A game of sit and wait—without the benefit of having a publicist or agent.
The London College of Fashion has a rather straightforward and novel way of promoting its BA graduates—it's e-published a magazine, a sort of dossier featuring profiles and the work of its best students. Curated by LCF's creative director Rob Phillips (yes, the school has a creative director), the publication features sketches, inspirations, sample images—really, it's fascinating even from a how'd-they-do-that point of view—and is a smart, new-media way to showcase students' work processes, talents, and final products.
It's available to check out free of charge at Issuu.com, an e-publishing platform where you can also view and download independent magazines such as Victor, a photographic magazine, Southern Flourish, a southern lifestyle magazine, and The Pin Up, a lifestyle magazine about retro-burlesque-pin-up culture.
