Being the non-badasses we are, our experiences in courtrooms have been fairly limited (to jury duty, mostly), so we were surprised to read this story in USA Today detailing the seemingly arbitrary list of clothes and accessories banned from courtrooms around the United States. Like, did you know that in certain parts of California, you'll be turned away from a courthouse for wearing flip-flops? Flip-flops. Aren't flip-flops practically the official state footwear of California?
Here's some other items they came up with:
· Delaware: No skirts with hems more than four inches above the knee· Judges crack down on inappropriate clothes in court [USA Today]
· Lake County, IL: In May, a woman was held in contempt of court for wearing an "offensive" T-shirt.
· Inkster, MI: No jeans allowed in court, that's the rule. Not even black ones—a man was turned away in April for wearing black jeans.
· Bakersfield, CA: Despite the state's easygoing reputation, don't even try to get into court wearing flip-flops. This June, a woman was forced to miss her court date because she was wearing the offending footwear.
· Hamilton County, OH: A man was threatened with a day in jail for wearing a Chucky T-shirt that bore the slogan "Say goodbye to the killer."
