Kate Lanphear is Cool

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Elle's style director Kate Lanphear is so cool. That's a fact. She's tall and slim and platinum blonde and wears cool clothes and lots of big black-and-metal accessories. People are obsessed with her style, but she's incredible modest. "I'm completely humbled by it. I mean, I am just your average redneck from Virginia," she tells The Cut. Other gems from their Lanphear interview: right now, she's really into Catholic iconography; she collects old Helmut Lang and Margiela, and she shops vintage and stores on St. Mark's Place.
