We were flipping through our gift bag copy of Brasil's Vogue ABEST, waiting to be swept away by Brazilian designer Carlos Miele's latest glamorous collection, when all of a sudden there was live music and the Grammy Award winning singer, Bebel Gioberto, came out on the runway. The music had an exotic Latin feel. It made us want to Samba, It made us want to sunbathe in Rio. It made us want to get a really painful bikini wax. We really don't know much about Latin music, and yet there was something familiar about the melody. And then Bebel started to sing the words of what we assumed would be a traditional Brazilian folk song..."We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control..." WHAT? It was a Latin version of Pink Floyd's The Wall!
It took us, and quite a few of the people around us, a few beats before we could stop giggling. But as the models came down the runway, the beauty of the clothing helped us regain our composure. In a season where we've seen a lot of neutrals, Miele's collection was packed with brightly colored sportswear and sparkly cocktail attire, mostly in solids. There were also some noteworthy black evening gowns, with sheer fabrics placed in interesting, yet tasteful places—all of which would make killer statements on red carpets.
Attending the show, with what we imagine was more composure than we had, were model Irina Shayk, The City's Olivia Palermo, singer Kat DeLuna and fashion doyenne, Fern Mallis. But we were most excited to see MTV reality star Kristin Cavallari, whose random Fashion Week quotes may start to become our new favorite obsession. While passing Kristin in her front row seat today, we overheard her tell a reporter, "I'm extremely allergic to dairy." We're not sure what this had to do with Carlos Miele's stunning fashions, but we sympathize. (Psst, Kristin—Lactaid Fast Act.)
