Is "California Soul" the Official Anthem of New York Fashion Week?

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Daniel Vosovic's show featured the epic, amazing, almost-violent remix of Marlene Shaw's 1969 version of "California Soul" you can listen to above via YouTube. The socially-conscious pop-soul-funk tune was written by Ashford & Simpson, originally recorded by the 5th Dimension, and was less notably covered by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. In 2008 Diplo along with Mad Decent released the version we heard at Thursday's fashion show on Verve Remixed 4.

This weekend, we heard Shaw's original version (after the jump, also via YouTube) at Loden Dager's show. So we have to wonder, is a 31-year-old song and a two-year-old remix version of it the official jam of Fashion Week? We'll keep you posted—and if you hear it while one of us isn't around, you'd better let us know.
