Brides-to-be and the otherwise fashion-obsessed, set your DVRs for The Martha Stewart Show on Thursday, January 20th for the wedding themed episode featuring the legendary Oscar de la Renta. Not to destroy the mystery, but the show is pre-taped and we had the privilege of dropping in on the taping.
Buzz was building during last minute walk-throughs and we even caught a glimpse of Twitter-personality @OscarPRGirl a.k.a. Erika Bearman, Oscar's director of communications, looking glam while fluffing the trains on the models' wedding dresses à la maid of honor.
"The dresses that I make are for the most extraordinary day of a woman’s life," said Oscar de la Renta in explaining his wedding design inspiration. "I want to give her something she will cherish forever." In his segment, the legendary designer chats with Martha and Martha Stewart Weddings editorial director Darcy Miller and offers some bon mots of advice, such as, "Don’t bring your mother" when shopping for your bridal gown.
The designer also presented five highlights from his bridal collections, including a delicious ostrich feather confection, a best selling gown of delicate pleated ruffles and a possibly envelope-pushing blue gown, which did feature beautifully embroidered white flowers, though. Judging from the gowns presented, we're thinking that Oscar isn't so into sleeves or spaghetti straps. He also graciously stuck around for a couple rounds of audience Q&A with the other wedding expert guests.
Speaking of other guests, Peter Callahan of Callahan Catering, dished about innovative catering ideas and showed off some adorable Barbie-sized donuts (we'll take about 20 of those, thank you). We quickly realized that we recognized him, not for being a caterer to the stars, but because he once played a prominent and spotlight-stealing role on an early episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen featuring his son. This was the episode where the son was so "stressed out" about planning his party that overbearing event planner father and son took a bonding moment via private jet down to Miami to decompress before the $250,000 shindig. But we digress.
Also of fashion note were the members of Carte Blanche, the wedding band (they played at Martha's nephew's nuptials) featured throughout the show. We spent the majority of the taping admiring the member's roaring 20's Great Gatsby-chic and wondering where the three female members bought their 20's-inspired shoes.
All in all, fun viewing even if you aren't planning a wedding in the near future.
