You know Frank—he's been writing about menswear, sales, television, new shops, the recession, Lisa Loeb, the Golden Girls and getting blasted for Racked for over a year. Well, we think it's time you got to know him and his quirky-irreverent views on life and fashion even better with his brand new column: Love, Frank. Taking the form of an open letter and always signed with love, Frank will rant about whatever style-related conundrum he encounters in a given week. So buckle your two-toned leather Moschino belts, folks, it's going to be ? Something.
We've been hyper-consuming the men's shows from Paris and Milan like many of our colleagues and counterparts have been watching the lead up to this year's Super Bowl (FYI: Steelers and Packers face off in Arlington, Texas on Sunday February 6th—start assembling many-layered dips now).
We're a sucker for Margiela—so outwardly lux this season! And we can pour over Watanabe looks indefinitely—keep uploading and we'll keep clicking. For fall we're already obsessed with those knit blazers! Do we aspire to one in Fair Isle or cable knit? Answer: Probably both.
We loved Phillip Lim and we loved Paul Smith and we loved Acne and we loved Ann Demeulemeester. And, there is absolutely no shortage of Things We Want among collections from Yves Saint Laurent, John Varvatos and Dries van Noten.
Two of our usual favorites, Moschino and Trussardi, were a little disappointing. One tuxedo covered in Moschino boot prints? Sure! The whole collection? Not so much. And Trussardi went from their usual ultra-luxury take on Euro-diffused Americana to something more akin to aliens and bondage and Dior. Still: There are pieces.
All that said, we are flipping out over D&G. Dolce & Gabbana's hipper, younger and only slightly-cheaper baby sibling—D&G is way trendy. Sometimes it's even trashy. And while a D&G show—or a Dolce & Gabbana show for that matter—usually includes a handful of items we'd seek out if we had the limitless clothing budgets and spatial parameters of our pipe dreams; neither collection is a go-to or a cornerstone of our established aesthetic. In fact: We don't have anything from either line.
That's about to change. A sporty collection heavy on box checks and not-your-usual fall/winter hues—we loved the fits, the length of the pants, the boxiness of the outerwear, the lambskin and fur, the over-dyed leather, those glen plaid blazer-bomber morphs, the styling and layering ? And we love, love, love the retro-Americana imagery. Smack a Coca-Cola logo on something and chances are we're going to buy it. Mickey Mouse, not so much—but we certainly appreciate the notion.
So, D&G, here's to your better-late-than-never emergence as a brand we'll covet and a label we'll seek out. And note: That blazer (above left) better get produced. You're on warning.
