On Tuesday night season 2 of Bravo's the Fashion Show came to a close; and though Dominique Pearl David didn't take the cake, it was a very close call. A fresh-out-of-school upstart Californian given to teen-style crushing and whining (which, incidentally, perfectly matched her asymmetrical bob), Dominique was consistent in her presentation of sleek and on-trend neutrals for the youngs and hips. Sometimes she probably should've spoken a bit less, but girl got talent and more than earned her slot in the final three.
She was good enough to answer a few quick questions for us via email—read on for the scoop on her crushings and cuddlings with David as well as her brand new move to New York City.
We've heard you've moved to New York—how'd that come about? How is that going?
I bought my one way ticket to New York the night that I got home from filming. It was a remarkable experience and I really realized that New York is where i needed to be. I absolutely love the city, and have found such inspiration just being in the city. I feel at home here, and very happy.
So, what's next?
I am helping Cesar with Gwen Stefani's line for this upcoming fashion week, but beyond that, I would definitely like to start selling some pieces and branding myself. I have a platform to speak from after being on the show, and I definitely feel that I need to take advantage of that.
How are you and David? Are you or did you ever actually become involved?
David and I never worked out in the end, but I wish him the best of luck on his career.
What did you learn from your older, more-experienced competitors?
So much, and I continue to learn. Cesar was a great mentor to me on the show, and still continues to show me the ropes of the industry in New York City. As far as constructing garments, he is very talented and I am grateful that he is so willing to share his knowledge. He also taught me some very cool dying techniques which you got to see a bit of last night.
What inspires your designs? The way you dress?
The mood I am in on a day to day basis. I get inspired by everything in my life, from people walking on the street, people I meet, places I go, everything. As far as the collections I design and the brand I am working to build, I love to work from the storyline of fairy tales to develop the color and feeling of the season.
Where are you shopping these days?
It sort of depends. I love All Saints and Zara, I always seem to find really great pieces in either. I have really been into Rag & Bone recently as well, but it's mostly for inspiration. I love a lot of the looks they have been showing.
Your thoughts on Isaac Mizrahi and Iman?
Isaac and Iman were tremendously supportive, I feel, throughout the whole process. Even when they did not like my looks, I felt that they really made sure that their critique was constructive and helpful. They helped open my eyes to myself, as well as the brand I would like to build.
