American Eagle Rolls Out Google Wallet For In-Store Payments

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Just launched: a brand-new way to pay for your purchases (and get discounts) at American Eagle Outfitters. Say hello to the Google Wallet app on your Nexxus S 4G—a tap-and-go payment method that can be linked to your Citibank credit card or an American Eagle gift card (or you can add money to your Google Wallet account from any credit card online).

We stopped by the New York launch American Eagle's Google Wallet partnership at the store's Times Square location this morning. The launch will be rolling out in five major US markets first: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington DC.

So, here's the deal. Right now Google Wallet tap-and-pay technology is only available on the Nexxus S 4G—next year, almost all smartphones will have the same capabilities. Also, right now, the only credit card that Google Wallet can be directly linked to is a specific kind of Citibank Dividend Mastercard. Again, this will change in the near future.

Once you've loaded up your Google Wallet account and downloaded the app onto your Nexxus phone, take a stroll through the store. Everywhere you see a circular green wifi-like sign, tap your phone on it and a special offer will be automatically stored in your Google Wallet account—this can range from specific discounts on products to saving between 10% and 30% on your entire purchase. When you're done shopping, bring your purchases to the register and tap your phone to check out. Easy peasy!

The folks on hand to help us this morning told us that one day, this tapping technology will replace everything in our wallets—credit cards, debit cards, bank cards, identification cards, and store loyalty cards. Brave new shopping world, here we come! Guess we should upgrade from our flip phone, huh.
