Daphne Guinness Regrets Buying Something You Probably Own

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Comedy writer Bonnie Datt once bought a chainmail vest "for clubbing"—a purchase she later came to lament, once she realized that chainmail isn't particularly slimming. Inspired by this, she now spends her spare time asking famous people to dish about purchases which they initially loved—but ended up regretting, for Buyer's Remorse.

When it comes to choosing subjects for our Buyer's Remorse interviews, we enjoy hearing stories from celebs from all different fields: actors, comics, musicians, athletes, politicos, writers, even chefs. But we confess, there are a few fashion folk on our wish list that we've always wanted to feature. We're excited that one of them is this week's subject, fashion icon Daphne Guinness.

The Honorable Guinness—artist, heiress, model, mother, and muse—has one of the greatest collections of contemporary designer clothing in the world. It's so impressive that the current Daphne Guinness exhibition at The Museum at FIT is dedicated to just a small part of it. (Which non-New Yorkers can view in her new book co-written with the museum's director, Valerie Steele). Daphne literally owns thousands of garments, including many amazing Alexander McQueen pieces, so it's obvious why we were thrilled to get a chance to ask her if she'd ever had Buyer's Remorse. We had to laugh when we heard her answer...

Racked: You have one of the most amazing collections of clothing in the world. Do you ever have Buyer's Remorse?

Daphne Guinness: Sometimes I wish I didn't have so many things because you have to take care of them. And I sort of think one learns from one's mistakes. So sometimes one's worst mistakes turn out to be the best things in life. Hmm, buyer's remorse...I can't really think of it, I probably have just blanked them. (All of a sudden Guinness gets a gleam in her eye—she's thought of something she regrets!) Blue jeans.

Racked: Blue jeans?

Daphne: Yep.

Racked: Any specific pair?

Daphne: Any pair. I don't really like the color. I like black jeans.
