The latest edition of Barnard College's fashion magazine, Hoot, includes an editorial by none other than New York Times critic Cathy Horyn. Fashionista spotted the piece, and in it, Horyn gives very specific advise for all ye fashion bloggers, including that you should move to Paris, speak fluent French, and write about luxury goods.

The article addresses Horyn's journalism career, which she began at Chicago's bureau of the A.P. as a copygirl before heading to The Virginian-Pilot. She began writing fashion at The Detroit News, and says that the experience she picked up at the papers "was useful to me on the fashion beat." She then begins to touch on fashion bloggers:

One of the things I notice about a lot of fashion blogs is that the writing is not supported by information or a depth of knowledge about the business or the design process. They lack reporting, which demands specific skills—being a good observer, developing sources, knowing what is relevant.

Her suggestion, then, is what was mentioned above: One should move to Paris and report on "the stuff that goes on behind the scenes." She does add a disclaimer, though, that "of course, you will not have access to the houses, but that is why you develop sources. It also helps to have an affinity for the subject." Also, it would probably help to have some money. Because if there's one thing we could have done with ourselves after college besides pay off our student loans, it would have been to move to Paris, speak fluent French, and start a fashion blog.
