So prim, so proper and yet so potentially seductive. Donna Karan's collection?the muted and tailored femininity with a slice of romance?has already been much compared to Grace Kelly style. Sure, that's true, but the first thing that popped into our mind and which stays with us in regards to our impression of the collection, is the 1953 Vittorio de Sica film Terminal Station, or Indiscretion of an American Wife. It's part of the Criterion Collection now, so it shouldn't be too difficult to Netflix or download if you want to see what we mean.
In it, an American woman (the impeccably attired Jennifer Jones) breaks up with her lover Montgomery Clift as she's trying to board a train to Paris. Of course what results are heart-wrenching scenes that involve an equally touching wardrobe, and Jennifer Jones could step right into the majority of this collection right now and recreate that movie. The structured bags, the belted trenchcoats, the fur stoles and evening-length gloves...not to mention the pearls! Where are we? Is this really happening in a raw space in Chelsea? Is that a slew of Vogue editors about 10 feet directly in front of us, sharing this experience?
But yes, oh yes. The luxury combined with the energy of every piece was moving; it was strikingly easy to imagine each model tearing up at the prospect of having to dash off on a plane or train or ocean liner and away from some romantic drama. Instead, however, they finished their catwalk and the lights dimmed.
Now, if you'll excuse us, we have a movie we have to go re-watch.
