Back when Russian heiress and clothing designer Kira Plastinina was in her mid-teens, she briefly had a chain of Barbie Pink clothing stores here in America. Sadly, they quickly went bankrupt and were shuttered overnight, leaving fully-stocked deserted stores and unanswered questions. This Fashion Week, however, the now eighteen year old Kira was poised for a US comeback. Her new, supposedly more sophisticated, line, Lublu Kira Plastinina, which she hopes to sell wholesale to boutiques, debuted with a presentation in the Tents Thursday night. Since this was a presentation, we thought we'd finally get a chance to talk to the legendary designer, find out where she's been, what visions guide her, why she's been more successful in the rest of the world than here, and what it's lke to have a Daddy who keeps buying you your own companies.
Sadly, Kira was nowhere to be found, as a parade of her designs moved from pedestal to pedestal on one side of the half-empty room. The line's colors were limited to reds, blacks, nudes and whites— bubble gum pinks were markedly absent from the collection. Styles ranged from a teenager's vision of clean adult lines and high style, to designs that were, well, overly revealing. Or to use a term we would have used, back when we were a teenager, "kind of slutty."
When we realized Kira wasn't attending the presentation, we tried to find a fact sheet with information about the line and its looks, but there was no onsite information to be found, anywhere. Not even from the publicist. We're guessing this doesn't bode well for Kira's second attempt to break into the US market. So we suspect it will soon be time for Daddy to finance incursion number three.
