Remember record stores? Boston does—the city is home to two Newbury Comics locations, with two more in Cambridge. All and all, Newbury Comics operates 29 stores in New England. But the undisputed flagship is this—the Newbury Street location.
The shop—expanded to twice its original size a handful of years ago—sells an incredibly deep selection of new music at very low prices. New releases priced between $7.99 and $10.99 are commonplace—and their biggest sellers are always on sale. But it's Newbury Comics, not Target—that top 25 is routinely populated by bands like Phoenix, Florence & the Machine, Jenny & Johnny, Ra Ra Riot ? Even Iron Maiden.
But CDs are just the beginning. The store packed full of comics and graphic novels, DVDs of all kinds, a tremendous variety of band tee shirts, a glut of new and classic vinyl, bags and footwear from brands like Dickies and Vans, hard-to-find magazines and an endless array of fun-ridiculous gifts and novelties (pink flamingos, monogrammed ping pong balls for BU Beirut tournaments, Hello Kitty everything, action figures you never knew existed, quirky greeting cards, a universe of one-inch-pins and posters and magnets). Our pick: The massive space devoted to gently-used music and movies starting at around $4. Try and leave empty-handed.
