Cleanser for Dry Sensitive Skin

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We got a sample of Darphin's Aromatic Cleansing Balm a little while ago and sort of put it aside and never tried it. First of all, we had no idea how to use it because it's a balm consistency and it's in a flat jar. How is this even a cleanser, we wondered? Well, our skin has been really dry and sensitive lately, so, lured by the rich texture and convinced by the mind-boggling testimonials we read on the site, we finally cracked it open—whoa, talk about love at first wash! Just a dab and some water becomes a creamy emulsion that takes off every bit of makeup without drying out our skin—not even a little. Plus, it smells great. We're officially obsessed, and, yes, we know it's $95 for a facial cleanser, but for anyone with dry, irritated, problem skin who's tried everything, this Aromatic Cleansing Balm is probably worth a shot.
