Very-big-picture-wise, in fashion, trends can, by and large, be grouped into a cyclic ebb and flow of more-casual or less casual. Like, Dior’s New Look silhouette that gained popularity in the late-1940s/early-1950s was less casual; the early-1990s grunge movement was definitely more casual—those are fairly extreme examples. American fashion has, in the past year, definitely moved away from the less-casual and towards the more-casual—it’s everywhere, the heritage movement, the plaid revival, the fixation on selvedge denim, the popularity of fluid, untailored silhouettes, this conscious transition to the use of organic, natural fibers.
It’s no wonder, then, that we’ve recently become obsessed with the concept of weekend wear—and not just because hello we love weekends, who doesn’t—and the possibility of finding style in incredibly comfortable cut-loose, do-anything, get-ready-for-fun clothes. Enter the geniuses at J. Crew and the company’s new J. Crew Weekend collection, which gets its own special six-page spread in the company’s newest catalog. Chock full of perfect weekend pieces—we’re obsessed with the Saturday square type tee ($40), done in collaboration with New York’s Saturdays Surf shop, and the pull-on cotton voile marina skirt ($80) (two words ftw: elastic waist)—it’s our new go-to spring shopping guide. We’re thinking about springing for the selvedge denim shorts ($80), what do you think?
