Turns out that the reality TV mavens over at TLC aren't just bringing My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding over from the UK—they've also started development on a series about gypsies and travelers in the United States.
According to census reports, there is an estimated population of 1 million gypsies and travelers living in the US—mostly dispersed through the south. "The series will reveal the everyday lives and the age-old customs that make up their family and social dynamics," says the release. "With unprecedented access, viewers will be invited into these tightly knit communities and follow as they throw elaborate celebrations—including weddings that last for days—and how they interact with the society outside of their own."
TLC will begin airing the UK edition of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding—renamed for the American market as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings—on (mark your calendars) May 29th with seven episodes scheduled to air through the summer. The American edition is currently in development and is likely to reach the small screen in early 2012.
