Back in the early-2000s, Project Alabama was one of the most exciting newcomers to the eco-friendly fashion scene—but just one year after the label was nominated for a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2005, designer Natalie Chanin was forced to shutter the company in the face of the financial challenges stemming from its commitment to domestic manufacturing, and her business partner Enrico Cinzano retained rights to use the name. Chanin went on to launch a new label, Alabama Chanin in 2007.
Fast forward to 2011: Project Alabama has just announced its relaunch this spring, with new designer director Charlotte Greenough at the helm. This time around, Project Alabama isn's as concerned with domestic production. Instead, the company has focused its production efforts on global, certified fair trade practices using sustainable fibers.
"Hand Touched. Community Crafted," says the relaunch release. "Project Alabama respects its rich heritage of partnerships with local artisans who are passionate about producing environmentally and socially conscious clothing."
