On the occasion of his 30th anniversary in the biz, designer Michael Kors talks to Harper's Bazaar's August issue—which hits newsstands July 12th—about work, life, and winning the lifetime achievement award from the CFDA last year.
“The nice thing about having this history is that it gives you the confidence to say, ‘Oh, that’s very Michael Kors,’” he told Bazaar. “When I won the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award [last year], I was like, ‘Wait a second, wow, oh, my God.’ This lightbulb went off, and I was like, ‘It’s okay to use yourself as an adjective.’”
As for his legacy?
“My legacy would be that you don’t have to give up anything. You can be chic but have a sense of humor, you can be sexy but comfortable, you can be timeless but fresh,” he says. “I think to be empathetic is the greatest gift you can have as a designer. Hopefully, people will look at me and say, ‘He really loved women.’”We really love Michael Kors. Yay 30 years!
