The Shit Store of Stavanger, Norway

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

When walking down a street named Ovre Holmegt in the old quarter of a Norwegian town, you expect to see certain things?a chocolate shop, a cutesy coffeehouse, an upscale restaurant advertising fresh-caught fish. All these it has, but there's also a Shepard Fairey on the corner, a Banksy up the street and a skateboard shop named "Shit," unapologetically commanding a corner in the center of an otherwise postcard-perfect neighborhood.

What is this Shit? Ahh, finally this question can be asked in all seriousness. This Shit is a Norwegian streetwear company, with two branches and a cult following. In fact, "14,670 people like SHIT®," their Facebook proclaims. Of course the day we stopped by was a Sunday, the only time they close and put up the "Gone Skateboarding" notice, so alas our purchase of the Shit-covered hipsteriffic sunglasses for John Jannuzzi will have to wait.
