The September Issue Breakdown: Height, Weight, Animal Cameos

Our methodology involved a trip to Whole Foods
Our methodology involved a trip to Whole Foods

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It's that time of the year again: The September issues (except Vogue, more on that later) have just hit newsstands. Because Racked is all servicey and stuff (we try), we hauled all the women's books we could lay our hands on—W, Elle, Instyle, Lucky, Glamour, Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire—back to the office and performed a thorough analysis of all their vital stats. Like: How many animals appear in the September issue of Elle? Answer: a frickin arkload.

Methodology: So we wanted to tell you how much the gigantic September issues weighed, but we didn't have a scale in the office. And we wanted to tell you how thick they were, but we didn't have a measuring tape. So we saddled two of our favorite contributors, David Chen and Payton Wang, with the task of figuring things out. Here is what happened: they hauled all the mags down to our local Whole Foods and weighed the books on the fruit scale (that explains the photos), and we agreed to dispense with the metric (and English) system altogether, and, for the purposes of this post, the magazines were measured in gummy bears.

(Like our methodology? Is it any surprise we flunked out of pre-med?)
