This Season: Defined Texture and a Bright Coral Color Palette

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome to Summer Beauty, our weekend coverage of this season's hair and makeup trends, as applied by masters in the biz on some very exceptional models. We headed over to the Hudson Guild Fulton Center and the Greenwich House Senior Center to photograph the finest ladies around in this summer's most sought-after looks. While doing so, we even learned a few tips to help us get through July and August—without breaking too much of a sweat.

For Mary's short crop, hairstylist Dayler Chagas added pomade to create texture and definition in her curls, but he left the back "a little bit messy" to keep it relaxed and summery. To prep her hair, he used a KeSARI serum and styled it with a Redken pomade and a Barrex mousse. To finish it off, he sprayed it all with a L'Oreal Elnet hairspray.

Makeup artist Cynthia Rose capitalized on one of the summer's biggest trends: a bright cheek. For Mary, she stuck with a coral color palette, but says that anything orange-based will work. "Everything else we kept pretty minimal, and then just a little hint of coral on the lips." To get the right color for her cheeks, she used Stila peony blush and MAC peaches blush, and on her lips, Smashbox's "Limitless Lip Stain" in guava and a MAC "So Chaud" lipstick.

For summer hair, Dayler recommends keeping things under control with just a little bit of hold: "A hairspray really is the best way to go, because with short hair you just style and spray." As far as summer makeup goes, Cynthia advocates that you can follow trends without going to crazy. "You could throw a little bronzer on, but keep it really simple and accentuate one thing, which is super easy for the summer. Anything orange. Orange lips, orange cheek...Just don't do everything at once."
