Happening Right Now: Patsy and Eddie Are Shooting Three Brand-New Episodes of Absolutely Fabulous

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Way back in April, we brought you the BBC announcement that early-90s television fashion hit Absolutely Fabulous was set to film three new episodes this summer. At the time, Joanna Lumley who plays Patsy Stone (who hasn't eaten since 1973) said this about the latest incarnations of Patsy and Edina: "They're very old and nearly dead and practically plugged into vodka machines."

Today, the BBC and Jennifer Saunders, who writes the series and plays Edina Monsoon (she was born Edwina, but changed her name to Edina, because it's chic-er), spoke to the New York Times:

Ms. Saunders told the BBC that production had begun on three new specials that would reunite the Patsy and Edina characters with Edina’s daughter, Saffy (played by Julia Sawalha) and her assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks), during “life-changing experience for one—which affects them all.

“Like a good bottle of Champagne,” Ms. Saunders said in a statement, “we hope that we have got better with time without losing any of our sparkle. Last week when we started filming in dear old west London, it was as if nothing had changed. It was raining. Nevertheless, we are so happy to be working for an audience that has grown just a tiny bit older like us but is still willing to let us fall over on TV in the name of P.R.”

We wonder what the life-changing experience will be? Tragedy or comedy or a little bit of both? No air dates have yet been announced, but we're excited to hear that the episodes are in progress.
