One thing we never imagined we'd do as an official part of Fashion Week is iron—hell that's something we don't even bother with at home. Yesterday, however, we found ourselves standing in the tents' Rowenta booth, pressing a T-shirt with one of their sleek looking irons.
No we weren't preparing a design for a show, or with our lack of domestic skills, accidentally destroying a designer's garment. Instead, we were taking part in one of the more fun promotions we've ever come across in the tents.The iron-making company Rowenta hired Project Runway's Althea Harper, one of the few bright spots from the LA season, to be the Rowenta Style Ambassador. We're not sure of the full extent of Althea's ambassadorial duties, but we do know that for Fashion Week, Rowenta had had the designer create a couple of cute Fashion Week iron-on designs.
In between fashion shows, tent attendees could choose one of these two designs—either a colorful drawing of one female model or a black and white sketch of three women—and press it onto either a free tote bag or T-shirt using their irons. We opted for putting the black and white drawing onto a shirt, which meant we had to actually use an iron for the first time in years—although we did have a little help from Althea. The futuristic-looking iron moved very smoothly, initially making us feel quite accomplished. Unfortunately, the decal didn't actually transfer to the shirt very well. We blame this on the decal itself, instead of on our newfound pressing skills, as we noticed that people using the more colorful iron-ons had much better results.
