If you didn't get your order in for any of the 400+ pieces from the Missoni for Target collection yesterday, launch day, well, looks like your only recourse will be eBay. Despite the day-long outtages, touch-and-go up-and-down mobile site, and the collaboration crashing the entire system at Target HQ, the Missoni for Target collection still managed to completely sell out online. How did this happen? How did one of the biggest big-box retailers in the United States not anticipate the demand (and the power) of Missoni-crazy shoppers?
The New York TImes explains:
“It’s a little bit embarrassing for one of the nation’s largest retailers to have a Web site that can’t support a rush—it’s not like they’re any strangers to rushes,” said Ian Schafer, chief executive of the digital marketing firm Deep Focus. “It’s saying, ‘We’re so popular we had to turn people away at the door.’ Then get a bigger place.”Meanwhile, in California, Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Kyle Richards tweeted that fights broke out at their local Target store over the Missoni collection:The problems came just three weeks after Target, which had been relying on Amazon’s back end for its Web site, switched to its own platform. But Ms. O’Murray said the crashing of the site was caused solely by demand for the products.
And someone else in Los Angeles tweeted back at her that a shopper had threatened to kill him over a Missoni for Target towel.
