After last week's Nicki Minaj mind-blown runway show, introducing daughter, Lulu back to the runway (and her company) and completing a couple cross-country openings in between, Betsey Johnson stopped by Macy's in Herald Square to promote her brand new line of watches. Much to the dismay of the hundreds of adoring and decked-out fans awaiting her on the main level, we took a couple minutes in the green room to get her perspective on the expansion of her line, time with her grand children and the line of watches in particular.

On this line of watches and work with jewelry company Miriam Haskell: I just have a range of my iconic looks—the pink, the leopard, the lightning bolts, the kitty cats—but what I love is that they always have stuff for young—my granddaughter is telling time on the skull with the bow on its head watch. They go from kiddie to grandma. They go from classic to twinkly to chic. They're great, and beautifully made. They are a great weight, which to me is very important in a watch. They are greatly made and I’m not just saying that.

In response to a request for cart-wheel tips: I don't have a tip for doing a cartwheel anymore, believe me. I wish I knew. I screwed up for the first time [this year]. I forgot my kick that gets me going. But, I went to kick and I went completely off balance. I have my split as a backup. It's a rough thing but a great thing to have to pull off each show. I don't practice in between or exercise or do anything. So, it's like Woah! Of course, I ended up with a leg brace from ankle to thigh that I got just walking [the next day]. So, I think just the walking part is dangerous for me.

On where she sees time pieces going within her lines: I’m sure we’re going to move on to [time pieces within our jewelry collection]. I don't like to have time on my wall, because it's too in your face, but I like it in a novelty thing like a pendant or a ring—a surprise piece. Watches are actually becoming a big accessory and the prices are so right that you can have your conservative one, your bling-bling hip-hop-y one, your girly one. I think girls are into this watch-wardrobe thing. Like they are with their bags and their shoes and their jewelry and everything else. Especially in this time, the accessories can really change your look without laying out a lot of bucks.

While on the subject of time, what she does in her spare time: I love to travel. I really love to hang out with my granddaughters, downstairs—I'm on 10, they're on 5, so it's really not too difficult to find the time. I'm down with my coffee every morning.

On her daily life: We are on a roll. I am doing a lot of appearances. I'm on the road a lot doing promotions or opening new stores, and it's a very busy time now. But, I love it. I heard a great quote on the radio the other day. Mark Twain said: “Make your vocation your vacation.” Isn’t that interesting? It’s a nice idea. I felt ol’ Marky and I—he must have been over worked! But I love what I’m doing.Payton Wang
