Free One-Day Shipping: Four Words You Will No Longer Be Hearing from Zappos

New, 8 comments

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If free one-day shipping seemed to good to last forever, it was. Zappo's has redacted its standout service, much to the lament of procrastinating bridesmaids everywhere. Now they, and you, will need to order their wedding shoes a minimum of 4 to 5 business days in advance, or suffer the overnight shipping charges.

Which, actually, doesn't seem like such a terrible fate. Though awesome, it must have been costing the company bazillions, and if you need a pair of shoes that quickly, surely you can get yourself to a mall, right?

So the change leaves us wondering less about the fate of shoppers, and more about the fate of Zappos. The free overnight thing was basically their claim to fame, and a good reason for shoe-seekers to start a shopping quest on Zappos.com. Without it, there's not much that makes them stand out from other online emporiums, like Endless or Amazon.

What do you think? Will you still shop Zappos without the free overnight shipping service?
