Simon Doonan on Porno Chic

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In an interview with Slate, Simon Doonan explains why he's not into bleach blonde hair and spray tans. He explains that he dislikes "porno chic" not because he's a prude—heavens no—but because of its conformist appeal. "If you glue a ton of fake blonde hair and spray tan, and then put on some porno shoes and a tight dress, um yea you're gonna look kind of like you work in 'the industry,' but you're also gonna look like every other tart on TV."
