This week, we take you to where it all began for online shopping site Of a Kind: co-founder Claire Mazur's apartment. In addition to having a special place in their hearts for the original space, the team also has a quite the eye for style: Every week, they feature a new designer on their site, along with limited-edition pieces created exclusively for Of a Kind. And we did, after all, spotlight them in our first-ever Racked 38. They took a break from scouring out the best new designers to show us what they wear on a typical day to work.
Claire Mazur, Co-Founder: For starters: I'll give you ten bucks if you ever catch me not wearing something handed down to me by my Mom or my Great-Aunt (or both). In the winter I dig a short a-line skirt with tights and booties. Showing off my legs helps people know there are some curves happening underneath the three layers of sweaters covering my torso.
Claire is wearing a Society for Rational Dress for Of a Kind Three Way Dress, a vintage Prada skirt "handed down to me by my mom," HUE sweater tights, Belle by Sigerson Morrison lace up booties, a Dream Collective for Of a Kind Sunset Wave Cuff, a Feliks and Adrik for Of a Kind Belizean Ring, and a non-funcitonal Vintage Vacheron & Constantin watch that from her Great-Aunt. "There's no point in me getting it fixed because my phone is my watch."
Style advice: Winter is no excuse to dress like a lazy snowman. Two pairs of tights are warmer than one pair of jeans, and a pair of black booties with rubber soles can handle icy sidewalks and will go with nearly everything.
Erica Cerulo, Co-Founder: I'm just two ticks left of classic with a clunky heel.
Erica is wearing an Evelyn shirt by Thomas Sires for Of a Kind ("It's crazy how often I wear this thing. And how often Lindsey and Claire wear it. We risk catastrophe on the reg"), an Alyson Fox necklace, a Gap skirt, a Leighelena bracelet, Steve by Steve Madden wedges, and Wolford tights. "Last year, I cheaped out and skipped the Wolfords, and I regretted it for five months."
Style advice: When in doubt, wear big shoes. And have a good jean jacket—it goes a really long way any time of year.
Lindsey Green, Director of Communications : Sports bar chic.
Lindsey is wearing J Brand jeggings, a Clu tank top ("This top made me realize the vast fashion possibilities of a simple, slouchy tank. Also, easy to transition from work to sports bar"), a Jill Stuart jacket, and a Voltan necklace by Dirty Librarian Chains for Of a Kind.
Style advice: Have a friend with good style come over, let them shop your entire closet and create outfits for you. Claire did this for me and it was amazing. It keeps you from getting stuck wearing the same outfits over and over and also gives new potential to pieces you’ve forgotten about or constantly wear the same way. Also, flat brown riding boots people, flat brown riding boots.
Grace Canlas, Project Manager: If Claire and Erica were on opposite sides of a style spectrum, I'd say I'm two ticks closer to being an Erica.
Grace is wearing a tri-fold Dip Top by Upstate for Of a Kind, a necklace from her mom ("She lives overseas in the Middle East. It's my name in Arabic. Think Carrie Bradshaw's necklace, but read right to left"), an American Apparel skirt, Uniqlo Heattech tights and marled socks, and Rachey Comey booties. "These babies are what I blew my first paycheck on. No regrets!"
Style advice: I find that a bold lip is the cure-all for those days when everything in your closet looks unappealing. (I swear by Tarte’s lip crayon in Fiery— it saves me from bouts of closet-boredom all the time.)
