6 Beauty Resolutions for 2012

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Plenty of people make New Year's Resolutions about losing weight, quitting smoking, or learning a new skill. But you can also make resolutions about your beauty routine, which means you have a good excuse to buy more products. 1. Take more risks

You may not want to jump out of an airplane, but you can go bold with bright red lips. Whether it's matte or sheer, a stick or a stain, it's like true love: you know it when you see it. And unlike true love, you can have five different kinds without anybody judging you.

2. Take better care of your skin.

It takes about a minute to apply moisturizer, which is way less of a commitment than that half-hour jog you said you were going to do every morning. Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Firming Cream gives you moisture (essential in the winter) and sun protection. And you don't even have to get out of bed.

3. Experiment with fragrances.

There's no law that says you have to wear the same scent every day or that you have to commit to a big bottle when you buy a fragrance. Each one of these Tocca Love Yourself Rollerballs is named after a different famous bombshell, so feel free to unleash your inner Cleopatra, if you're feeling regal today, or your Brigitte Bardot alter ego, if blond and leggy is where you're at.

4. Strengthen your nails.

You already own 50 bottles of polish. So between manis, take a breather and put on this Sally Hansen's Green Tea and Bamboo Nail Strengthener. Who doesn't want their nails to smell like green tea?

5. Always take your makeup off before bed.

Although it's a basic rule of beauty, many of us are too tired (fine, too drunk) to remove makeup before going to sleep, which just results in clogged pores and pillows stained with yesterday's smoky eye shadow. This Rimmel London Eye Makeup Remover is so gentle you'll hardly even notice it.

6. De-stress.

The #1 resolution in America is "be less stressed." While we can't get your boss fired or make your mom stop calling you to ask why you haven't met the right guy yet, we can suggest this Aromatherapy Associates De-stress Muscle Bath and Shower Gel, which smells like ginger and rosemary.
