Between the Gap "Manifest Destiny' T-shirt fail and the Navajo lawsuit against Urban Outfitters, there have been some understandably upset people in the Native American community. That means that the timing is perfect for Native Max, a new online fashion magazine that is created for, by, and about Native Americans.
Kelly Holmes, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe who lives in Denver, said that she struggled to find any representations of her culture in traditional mags. "There's really no magazine, a Native-owned and operated, Native-designed magazine. There's nothing like this magazine out there. The ones that do have stuff focused on younger people, they're really vulgar and very revealing," Holmes told the AP.
The first issue's cover girl is Mariah Watchman. America's Next Top Model junkies will recgonize her as the show's first-ever Native American contestant (she was on cycle 18 and they totally made her dress like Pocahontas in a not-at-all-awkward episode). As for the rest of the issue, there's an article about how to tell when Native crafts are legit, a few profiles of Native artists and designers, and playlist called "A Tribe Called Red." Bonus points: it's also gorgeously designed.
