Carine Roitfeld, style maven and mastermind behind new Bible CR Fashion Book, is peddling her recent MAC collection, which naturally led her to talking about eyebrows, daily makeup routines, botox, and...inner mouth massages? Enjoy her best tips (and a few things to avoid) below.
Her makeup takes five minutes: "Black [eye] makeup and big eyebrows; it's my signature and it's very French. I use my fingers for everything. I like that it looks not-so-fresh, not-so done. It's the personality of my makeup. Black pencil—everyday. Eyebrows—everyday. Eyelash curler—everyday. Mascara—everyday. [It takes] 5 minutes. I have no time!"
This is how it's not supposed to look: "Black eyes and a red mouth! It's too much; it doesn't look cool to me."
This is how it is supposed to look: I like red lipstick with nothing. I don't like it when makeup looks very try-too-hard. I like it when makeup looks like you have more important things to do than to look at yourself. Like you have other things to do than your makeup! On the other hand, you have to try different looks. If you don't try you'll never know! My friend Tom Pecheux tried electric green eyes on me and I hated it, so now I know."
She accepts her thick eyebrows (except for the middle bit): "Bleaching eyebrows makes me crazy—all the models were bleaching eyebrows. It's burning, you know. I never liked it. So I'm very happy, this [collection] is my revenge—I could be Frida [Kahlo]. This is the reason there [are tweezers] in the MAC palette, because I need to take off some in the middle."
She doesn't need Botox, but maybe later? I don't use Botox because I don't have wrinkles—I'm lucky. Some people say, 'Oh, I'll never do this.' I don't know, maybe in 10 years I'll want to do a lift. Maybe in 10 years I will go to Brazil and I will do a lift on my neck."
She's not as confident as you think: "I'm not confident at all. People think I'm confident; I'm not. I'm always a shy person. But being a shy person means you can be crazy, it's a totally different thing."
