The beauty of the high-low collaboration is that you can score artfully designed garments for much, much less than you would spend on the designer's original collection. But let's face it: cheaper doesn't exactly mean cheap. Many of the pieces in the Margiela for H&M collab clock in at $300 and up, which is not exactly throw-away money. In preparation for tomorrow's big launch, we took a look at what you can get on a total budget of $150.
For that amount, all the leather statement pieces and most of the shoes are out, unfortunately. Gone too is the funky outerwear. But just breathe for a minute and let it go. There is so much left, and all of it is bound to add an edge to your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Here's what we recommend.
Horizontal Dress, Glove Clutch, Oversized Turtleneck, Tailored Jacket, all $149
Suggestion 1: The investment piece
There is no shame in investing in one single item that you will love and get a lot of wear of out. In fact, we highly recommend it. Each of these items will blow your whole budget, but can be worn numerous ways for numerous occasions. Personally, we love the oversized turtleneck in either the navy or the cream. If you're in need of a party dress this season, this fun take on the LDB is an excellent option. The glove clutch is a novelty piece you can keep forever and break out whenever, and the tailored jacket is just a no brainer.
Fusion of Skirt and Trouser, $99; hair lock necklaces, $12.95 each; keyring bracelet, faceless watch bracelet, and open clasp watch bracelet, $49.95 each
Suggestion 2: Pair something identifiably Margiela with classics you already own
For example, these funky spants or any of the chic oversized trousers in collection will go perfectly with a tee and some pumps from your own wardrobe. Add some statement jewelry from the collab and call it a day.
Trompe l'oeil bodysuit, $39.95, and blazer, $99
Suggestion 3: Bring on the crazy!
True, so much could go wrong with this crazy trompe l'oeil bikini bodysuit thing, but also, so much could go right. Think Madonna, circa Express Yourself. Think of how awesome it would be to wear that shirt with this awesome blazer (or any of the other ones from the collection—most are under $150) to a holiday party this season instead of your standard cocktail dress. That's the Margiela spirit! Plus, you'll be able to wear the blazer with just about anything you already own after your "Express Yourself" moment passes.
Whatever you decide to get, we highly recommend planning it out before you head to your local H&M to shop. As always with these collabs, opening day will likely be a shitshow and items will sell out fast. Stay tuned to our local LA, Chicago, and New York sites for updates throughout the day.
