Fashion Experts Weigh In: What Was the Best Trend of 2012?

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

As 2012 draws to a close, we're surveying our friends in the fashion industry about the year's biggest news stories and most exciting developments. First up: Best Trends. Readers, let us know what you think in the comments.

Tracy Reese, designer: So many beautiful trends to choose from, but the one that stood out to me the most was brocade. The colors are so rich and deep and perfect for winter.

Phil Oh, photographer and Street Peeper blogger: Geometric prints and motif sweaters.

Áslaug Magnúsdóttir, Co-Founder Moda Operandi: Stripes. From Marc Jacobs' mod graphics to Jonathan Saunders' metallics, each designer's interpretation may have been different, but the standout trend was most definitely stripes.

Simon Kneen, Creative Director Banana Republic: Bright color and great tailoring.

Erica Cerulo, Co-Founder Of a Kind: I smile every time I see a cowboy boot or an Isabel Marant-ized take on a cowboy boot, even—in NYC.

Pamela Love, jewelry designer: Nail art.
