Whereas Monday night's Marc Jacobs Fall 2012 spectacle was a complicated conceptual journey, Tuesday's Marc by Marc Jacobs show was grounded right back into the retail-friendly realm of accessible fashion.
First: Marc Jacobs proper. It took us a while to figure out what was happening on the elaborate, twisting runway set. The oversized hats and accessories, the layers upon layers of imperfectly matched knits, the Oliver soundtrack playing in the background? Right. Marc Jacobs' Fall 2012 collection was some kind of street urchin fantasy, complete with gigantic, Dr. Seuss-y hats, oversized Eliza Doolittle shawls, and glittery blazers straight out of a little girl's imagination.
Marc by Marc Jacobs, on the other hand, was down to earth, if not downright grungy. Military school-inspired looks paired with combat boots and severe hair grounded the collection in utility, not fantasy. This is Marc Jacobs we're talking about, though, so there were a few quirky twists worth noting: the drum major hats for one, the Jenna Lyons glasses for another.
The stand out Marc Jacobs moment of the week, however, were the oversized Pilgrim shoes from his collection show, which Mr. Jacobs himself wore both nights to take his bow. Our prediction? These clunky bad boys will be the Mui Mui sparkle booties of fall 12.
