Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
There are a lot of things on the Costco website you can buy that might surprise you. While the free-standing mega locations commonly feature 24 packs of Frosted Flakes and five-pound cartons of Easy Mac, their e-commerce is truly another story. Currently on the site's landing page: a $799 firearm safe, a $6,999 seven-person jacuzzi, and then—oh wait—a really expensive diamond. We thought we hit the motherload last year when we found one for $1M, but today, Madison Avenue Spy points us in the direction of this listing for a 18.88 Carat IF Clarity, Faint Pink Loose Diamond for $2.3 million.
So that you can be sure you're not spending your hard-earned millions on something bogus, the item listing comes with a link to an International Gemological Information certificate of authenticity. You can't order it directly from the site—you have to call a number, or email diamonds@costco.com. And apparently, if you're unhappy with its beaming sparkle, you may even be able to return it, though the site warns that "Costco warehouses may require additional time to verify the diamond."
