The Side Boobs of Spring: April's Must-Have Cover Feature

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

With April just around the corner, doesn't it feel like the time is right to, er, let loose a little bit? Magazine editors the country round certainly think so. Enter the exposed side boob, which is gracing covers ranging from Vogue to Rolling Stone this month. Why the side boob, you ask? Perhaps it's because as fashion moves towards a more polished mood, the allure of untethered breasts bouncing around under spring clothes is just that irresistible. Or perhaps it's simply because in the age of the furkin, everything else has already been seen and done. We actually have no idea why this is becoming such a trend, but from demure to over-the-top, here's a look at four side boob specimens on newsstands right now.

Jennifer Lopez for Vogue:
This is exactly how Anna Wintour would do side boob: A demure glimpse that is as much about that Bottega Vaneta dress as it is about anything else. JLo's cover says, "I may be 42 and divorced, but I'm still smokin."

Jessica Biel for W:
Allow Jessica Biel to give you a lesson in keeping sideboob-age classy. Despite the smoldering and the reclining and the less-than-aquadynamic fit of her Louis Vuitton swimsuit, the sex appeal in this cover is more about what she's covering up than what she's giving away.

Jennifer Lawrence for Rolling Stone:
And here's where we leave classy behind. Though technically the Hunger Games star has her side boob covered with gauzy white cotton, you can still totally see it... along with her complete right nipple. Also, negative points for terrible lighting.

Jessica Simpson for Elle:
And the mother of all April's side boobs is, of course, Jessica Simpson. If you want to take the sexiness out of boobs, just go ahead and photograph them while they are pregnant and being manhandled by their owner. Why this ever happened at all, the world will probably never know. What we can be sure of is that not even Demi Moore got a second naked pregnant cover—so God willing, it will never happen again.
